Interview with Karen Gorrell, founder and owner SPOILMEFASHION.COM
You started the company to put two kids through college. What were your first steps to partner with designers, create the business model and launch the website? I went to trade shows initially. And then I got connected with a lot of the indie designers through friends of friends and word of mouth.
I love that most of your collection is made in the USA. Is that an important factor to you when deciding what jewelry lines to pick up? It’s not a must, but we do pride ourselves on working with American Designers, especially in this economy.
How did you maintain a work/life balance while starting your company (or do you think balance is a myth!?) I’ve incorporated my business into my life and my life into my business. Whether this is good or bad or a balance remains to be seen!
Any funny stories to share about starting a business, or mistakes you’d care not to repeat? I did many stupid things that would make others laugh but that bring tears to my eyes to think about! Mainly they are centered around choosing economical solutions that at the end of the day cost me twice as much when I had to redo them because they were sub-standard. The lesson learned is that you get what you pay for, and if you are going to be unhappy with the cheap solutions and have to redo them, don’t choose them in the first place!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue their passion and start their own business? A sense of humor will be as important to you as a good business model.
