Lilly Pulitzer is one of my style icons, but wearing her dresses is so much more than that: I have a serious history with Lilly dresses and memories of vacations, parties, weddings and shopping with my mom. I can remember specific dresses for occasions – and I have kept every single one of them even though some of them have, ahem, shrunk.
I remember the first time I discovered Lilly Pulitzer in high school – I was with my mom in a shop called Geraniums in Charleston, WV and I saw the brightly colored patterns and vintage shift shapes and thought WHAT ARE THOSE I LOVE THEM SO MUCH THEY MAKE ME SO HAPPY. My mom laughed and made a comment that she remembered Lilly from way-back-when and thought it was funny that I was so drawn to them.
I wore Lillys to graduation parties in high school, sorority mixers in college, bridal showers for best friends, brunches, lunches, dates, and sunny summer day parties – and all have special memories.
So CHEERS to Lilly for creating a distinct style that is fun, vibrant, and enhances every occasion with a colorful splash of pattern.
Here’s a great write-up about Lilly Pulitzer in the New York Times.
