Disney just released Peter Pan and we have watched it three times since we bought it. Thomas loves it.
This is the first time I have seen it since childhood, and I found some surprising similarities to an episode of the Bachelor. You probably think my brain is full of pixie dust if you haven’t seen the movie in a long time, but if you have seen it recently, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I know that I am not the only person to make these observations about the girl drama because I Instagram-chatted with my friend Kelly about it.
Here are our Bachelorettes:
1. Tinkerbell: Bachelor’s First Date
Tink feels like Peter chose her first and is jealous when he pays attention to Wendy. Wendy goes for an innocent kiss, Tink pulls her hair. And that’s how it begins. She is bothered that Peter is even paying attention to someone else even though they have not had the “what are we?” conversation. He’s not taken, but it doesn’t stop her from getting feisty.
2. Wendy: Viewers Choice
Wendy is the one all of the viewers love and the other girls hate because she is constantly the victim to the other girls’ mean shenanigans.
3. Tiger Lilly: Sporty Flirt
Tiger Lilly is a bohemian princess with cool braids, dress and moccasins – the girl has a unique style, great dance moves, and gives Peter a few Eskimo kisses during a party. She’s a free spirit and we all want to copy her style.
4. Mermaids: Sexy and Not a Girl’s Best Friend
The Mermaids splash water over poor Wendy at their introduction, who is innocently excited to meet some new gal pals. They aren’t there to make friends, and certainly aren’t going to pretend to be nice to Wendy. We like them for their honest cattiness, unlike Tinkerbell who tries to hide her vindictiveness until she’s busted by the Lost Boys and is forced to fess up to Peter that she tried to get Wendy shot of the sky while flying to the secret hideout. The Mermaids wear borderline inappropriately skimpy clothing, bat their eyelashes and beg for Peter to tell them stories about his heroics. Of course Peter loves them, and they are a shoe-in for the final four.
Meanwhile, our bachelor, Peter Pan, is completely oblivious to the jealous antics of all of the girls vying for his attention. He only wants to fly around, taunt Captain Hook, go to Native Neverland* dance parties and never grow up.
*they are Indians in the movie, and in an effort to be politically correct, I almost called them Native Americans until I realized they aren’t in America, they are located in Neverland, so I supposed the best PC phrase would be Native Neverland. See my logic?
And of course Thomas just likes to see Peter Pan fly around and dance to Follow the Leader.
How about you? Have you seen Peter Pan recently? It really is a cute movie, and I love that a movie from the 1950s is still popular today. I watched it growing up, and now my baby loves it.
