Let me tell you something: my husband and I are NOT do-it-yourselfers. Our first home was a townhouse in Atlanta that had decor a la 1992 complete with shades of cranberry and hunter green, paisley and lovely gold fixtures. We lived there for two years and never did one thing on my original “must fix it” list.
When we moved to Myrtle Beach, we immediately knew The Market Common was the perfect location for us: it was currently under development but offered a unique urban lifestyle found in other cities, but the first of its kind in Myrtle Beach: SOLD!
We watched the area grow from the dirt up: each week, we drove to see the progress of construction of both the shopping center and our house, and it was such a fun time for us. Way back in 2007, before Pinterest, I used a notebook full of design ideas from my favorite magazines.
Here are some of the reasons buying a new home is the perfect decision for people like us:
- No surprise repairs: when everything is new, nothing is old and/or expired. Shocking revelation, I know: but this obvious point needs to be made. Home repairs can be very expensive. It’s no fun to spend money on something boring like a roof leak!
- Customize your house: this is the most FUN part about buying a new home! You get to pick out all of the design details, and you don’t inherit some else’s bad taste. We chose the hardwood floor color, cabinets, fixtures, carpet and the exact locations of outlets, phones, and cable connections. We were able to set up the house exactly the way we wanted it before we moved in – brilliant!
- You have a blank canvas: in addition to picking out the designs, the entire house has a base coat of paint, so there is no preparation when you want to add your own paint colors or wallpaper.
Over five years + one baby later, we still absolutely love our home. We use every bit of this well-designed townhouse – the open floor plan is perfect for our family. There have been some changes, of course! The dining room easily converted to a playroom and we added a changing table to the middle floor bathroom (pictured above.)
