I love receiving handwritten notes, don’t you? Getting a piece of mail that isn’t typed in a letter-sized envelope and has the address handwritten is the first thing to stand out in a stack of mail that includes large-size postcards with sale information, catalogs, and bills. Who is it from? What will it say? It’s all very exciting, unexpected and rare.
A few weeks ago, I received a note from someone I’d met at a conference – it was a quick, handwritten note saying she’d enjoyed meeting me and hoped to see me again at the next conference. How classy! Obviously, it stood out in my mind and I thought “I need to start doing that, too!” and it got me thinking about the occasions to opt for a fountain pen instead of the keyboard when sending a note.
Emily Post says, “we believe that there is still a place for handwritten notes in our fast-paced society – especially for something as important and personal as the thank-you note.” And who can argue with Emily Post? Not one woman in the South will, that’s for sure.
Some ideas for handwritten notes for business:
For taking you to dinner:
Thank you for taking our team to dinner last night, it was a very thoughtful gesture and we had a wonderful time at the oyster bar.
After meeting someone at a conference:
I really enjoyed your talk on social media at the conference, and picked up some great tips for our company. Hopefully, we can do business together in the future.
After an important phone call:
Thank you so much for taking the time on the phone and allowing me to tell you about our company.
Finally, for all of the bloggers attending the Blogher Conference this weekend, sending a handwritten note to brands you’d like to collaborate with and bloggers you enjoyed meeting is a great way to stay connected.
What are some occasions you choose to write a handwritten note instead of an email?
