Do or Don’t: Bar Food

Crafty Rooster in Conway

Do you love bar food? Non-organic, probably not free-range, cooked in un-healthy oils, food that pairs well with beer? You don’t have to admit it.  You can just nod and secretly be happy that someone else likes it, too.

Since my metabolism decided to work in slow motion when I hit my 30s, I can no longer eat the same food that I enjoyed care-free in my 20s as often.  Also, we don’t really hang out in bars, since we are parents and all – we opt for a nice restaurant instead.  Since my husband is in the beer/wine business, he knows the bars in the area and has mentioned this particular restaurant a few times – the Crafty Rooster, in Conway SC.  I was in the mood for chili after a very VERY chilly bike ride*, so off to the Craft Rooster we went!

*see what I did there? I slipped in the fact that I exercised, so you can’t be too judgmental when you read what I ordered!

Crafty Rooster has an extensive craft beer selection (I’m guessing that’s why it’s called “crafty rooster”) and actually has a menu with a few unique items – a southern twist on typical bar food.  We tried a few of the appetizers – buffalo chicken dip and pretzels.  Will had the chicken bog (yum! I am going to make this one day.) and I had the chili I was craving.

Let’s talk about the Buffalo Chicken Dip.  It tastes like a buffalo wing but you don’t have to get your hands dirty. OMG! Hooray!  I decided to Pinterest it and there are a million recipes but I want to try this one :

because it says it’s healthy (I hope it’s tasty!) I may try it this week.

The pretzels – also delicious. Light, fluffy, pretzel balls. The real winner, though, was the buffalo chicken dip.

The chili was fantastic – but my heat tolerance reached its threshold halfway through the bowl after snacking on the buffalo chicken dip, so I may have over-ordered on spicy dishes.

Talk to me.

What are your favorite comfort foods? Have you found any healthy alternative recipes you’d like to share?

I have had a love/hate relationship with bar food but have mostly given it up since becoming a vegetarian and a brand new vegan. Being a brand new vegan means that I still reach for grated Parmesan cheese and pizza is missing that extra something without cheese but I am getting there. If you want to keep eating your normal diet, then avoid an afternoon of Netflix documentaries like “Forks Over Knives” which will make you feel like a guilty fat slug. Anyway, Pinterest was abuzz with this Cauliflower Buffalo Wing recipe so I just had to try it. It is fantastic! It is easy and satisfying. Check out the link and happy bar hopping! http://www.skinnytaste.com/2013/01/spicy-buffalo-cauliflower-bites.html?m=1

Julie – laughing at your second comment!! Yes, I’ve watched those documentaries and love the idea of being vegan… But just can’t make the leap. Kudos to you!! I saw that cauliflower recipe and am intrigued. I do love roasted veggies and really wings are just about the sauce, so maybe that could be the perfect app!!

I tried to create a forum for us to chat as a group over at SITS Girls but couldn’t ever get it to work. If no one else has already created us a discussion page we could use this FB group if everyone is on board –> https://www.facebook.com/groups/1396836790573227/

LOL I’m glad you caught the fact that I exercised even!! ha
Now I’m going to look up dough balls with bacon and cheese fondu. If I run in place while making them I’m sure the calories won’t count!

My favorite comfort food always involves cheese! Usually queso dip and chips- YUM. That buffalo chicken dip sounds so good. I will have to give it a try- Super Bowl Sunday is the perfect opportunity! Thanks for sharing.

Hi! Stopping by from our SITS tribe! I’m not a big fan of bar food, but I’m a total sucker for appetizers (and sometimes these are one in the same regardless of the kind of restaurant you are at!). I definitely love any kind of cheesy dip! These pictures are gorgeous! Makes me hungry!

Look forward to connecting with you this week!
