Southern babies dress the same today as they did in 1960: white knee socks and John Johns for boys, and white knee socks, smocked dresses and bonnets for girls.

Tips for picking out classic baby clothes
01. Don’t Save the Cute Clothes.
Seriously, they grow out of clothes every other day. Put them in the smocked, the Lilly Pulitzer, and the ones you think you need to save for a special occassion — because they may not fit in your favorite outfit next week!
02. Don’t Buy Too Many in Small Sizes.
Along the same lines as #1, they grow. SO FAST. If you’ve had a baby, you know this to be true but let me remind you – you’ll have clothes with tags on it and you’ll think “wha!? how did that happen?” If you see an outfit you are dying to have – get it in a larger size – like even 12 or 18 months. They wear size 3-6 months for about 5 minutes. At 12 months, the growth slows down slightly and they will wear clothes for a few months so it’s best to buy the older sizes.
03. Definitely get a bonnet you love.
Sunshine requires a hat. Get a cute bonnet – for a boy or girl – you will get a lot of use out of it. We have a pink and white Beaufort Bonnet and baby girl has worn that with every outfit in her closet, everyplace we go. She looks adorable, of course, but it also protects her sensitive skin from the searing sun.
